Short Bio

Riccardo Lattanzi is an Associate Professor of Radiology at the New York University (NYU) Grossman School of Medicine and has an affiliate appointment as Associate Professor of Electrical and Computer Engineering at the NYU Tandon School of Engineering. He is the Director of training of the Center for Advanced Imaging Innovation and Research (CAI2R). He is a faculty member at the NYU Vilcek Institute of Graduate Biomedical Sciences, where he serves as the Director of the biomedical imaging and technology Ph.D. program. He is currently the director of the course Practical Magnetic Resonance Imaging 1.

Riccardo received his Ph.D. in medical and electrical engineering from the Harvard-M.I.T. Division of Health Sciences and Technology (HST) in 2008, following a Master of Science in electrical engineering and computer science (2006) from M.I.T. and a laurea degree (2000) in electronics engineering from the University of Bologna (Bologna, Italy).

While working as a researcher at the Rizzoli Orthopedic Institutes in Bologna between 2000 and 2003, he was involved in the development of the Hip-Op preoperative planning system for total hip replacement surgery and later responsible for its technical and clinical validation. From September 2002 to March 2003 he was a Fulbright research scholar at the Medical Robotics and Computer Assisted Surgery (MRCAS) laboratory at Carnegie Mellon University (Pittsburgh, PA), working on accuracy evaluation of an image-based surgical navigation system for orthopedic surgery. Since 2004 his research focus has shifted to magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). For four years he was a research assistant in the MRI unit at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and since 2008 he has worked at the Center for Biomedical Imaging of the NYU School of Medicine. In 2008 he won the I.I. Rabi Young Investigator Award of the International Society for Magnetic Resonance in Medicine (ISMRM), for his theoretical work on the electrodynamics of parallel transmission for MRI.

Riccardo served for three years as President of the Italian student association at M.I.T. and founded the New York Chapter of the Italian Scientists and Scholars in North America Foundation (ISSNAF), for which he currently serves as co-chair. He is a former Aspen Junior Fellow of the Aspen Institute Italia, has been selected for the Young Leaders Program of the Council for the United States and Italy in 2012, is a member of several scientific societies and was elected to the Sigma-Xi research honor society in 2006. He is a regular contributor of the Italian newspaper La Stampa and writes about science and technology for the Italian edition of the magazine Wired.
